What to do when you have a water leak!

You walk into your kitchen and you’ve spotted something out of the ordinary. There’s a darker spot on your ceiling that was never there before, it even looks kind of wet. You’re thinking maybe it’s just dirt or a shadow, but you get your step-ladder to check it out. When you get closer to the spot you notice it’s damp and your drywall has a soft spot. Your home has a leak somewhere, and it’s soaking through your first floor ceiling from upstairs.

Water leaks can happen in any home where water supply lines and drain lines run. This is a problem that should be taken care of by a professional plumber immediately to avoid even more damage. Once you’ve called an expert plumber to repair the leak you need to make sure you’ve shut off the water source to the leak to prevent even more damage to your home.

The first thing you want to do is identify the source of the leak. If you can find out where the leak is coming from it can really help the plumber once they arrive. Is the leak coming from a section of pipe? Are there any water fixtures or appliances that could be the source of the leak (ex. faucets, water heaters, showers, toilets)? If the leak is coming from a plumbing fixture it may be possible to shut off the supply of water to that particular fixture.

  • Faucets can have shut-off valves beneath the faucet.
  • Toilets can have similar shut-off valves like faucets behind the toilet on the supply line coming from the wall or floor.

Next, If you aren’t able to find a shut-off at the fixture or appliance, or if the leak is in a main water supply pipe, locate the shutoff to the supply for your home and turn it off. This will stop the flow of water through your home and should help the leak to come to a stop until your expert plumber is able to repair it.
